In 2025, Nissan may plan to launch a new generation of the rugged Terra SUV, based on the technical platform of the Zhengzhou Nissan Z9 pickup truck. This decision reflects Nissan’s dual considerations of strategic retreat and technological integration in the rugged off-road market, while also highlighting the survival logic of traditional automakers to “reduce costs and increase efficiency” amid the rising tide of new energy vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhengzhou Nissan Z9 Pickup is built on the “Global Multi-Purpose ORV Platform,” with its core advantages being a high-strength body structure (97% high-strength steel), a part-time 4WD system, and dual powertrains of 2.3T diesel and 2.0T gasoline. If the new generation Terra adopts this platform, it can directly use the Z9’s BorgWarner intelligent transfer case, Eaton electronic control differential lock, and 12 all-terrain modes, reducing the development cycle by 40% and lowering the R&D costs by approximately $250 million. For instance, the Z9’s 2.3T diesel engine has a peak torque of 500N\u00b7m, paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. If transplanted to the Terra, it will fill Nissan’s technical gap in the diesel off-road vehicle sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Z9 pickup truck is positioned as “dual-purpose for passenger and commercial use,” with a cargo box volume of 1332L, balancing family needs and utility attributes. By contrast, the new generation Terra may emphasize its “urban off-road vehicle” identity by shortening the cargo box and increasing rear passenger space (Z9 wheelbase reaches 3300mm), creating a “light luxury off-road” image. Referring to the Z9’s L2 smart driving system (including a 540\u00b0 transparent chassis and adaptive cruise control), the Terra may upgrade to L2+, equipped with DeepSeek AI models, allowing dialect voice interaction and seamless OTA upgrades, attracting young family users. Besides, 28 storage compartments and 0.87\u33a1 panoramic sunroof will also enhance Terra’s competitiveness in comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the new-generation Terra is created based on the Z9 platform, it essentially marks Nissan’s “technology accessible to all” strategy in the rugged ORV market\u2014achieving a balance of cost and performance through the modular sharing between pickup and SUV platforms.
