A 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL, one of the most iconic homologation specials in the automaker\u2019s history, is now up for auction via RM Sotheby\u2019s. This Italian-market, second-series example has been meticulously restored by the renowned specialists Oldenzaal Classics, with a restoration cost exceeding $268,000 USD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CSL, presented in its factory-correct Taiga Metallic over black leather, retains its numbers-matching 3L engine, as confirmed by an accompanying BMW Classic Certificate. Notably, this car is equipped with aluminum body panels, light-alloy Alpina wheels, Scheel sport seats and an air conditioning system, making it a highly desirable model for collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for its significant role in BMW\u2019s racing history, the 3.0 CSL emerged after Bob Lutz and Jochen Neerpasch spearheaded BMW\u2019s return to touring car racing in 1972. This model, with its aerodynamic modifications and enhanced engine specifications, quickly became a formidable competitor in various racing championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This specific CSL, one of 429 second-series models produced between September 1972 and March 1973, was initially supplied to BMW\u2019s Italian distributor on December 8, 1972. It later found a home with its first private owner in Rome in February 1973. The car remained with the same owner from 1983 to 2005 and was later exported to Switzerland, where it underwent an extensive restoration starting in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RM Sotheby\u2019s estimates that the vehicle will sell for as much as $300,000 USD, with bidding set to begin August 15 as part of its Monterey Sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
