These days, all kinds of people own Jeep Wranglers, even if they don\u2019t do much off-roading. Why not? A Wrangler is pretty fun, involving to drive, and offers an open-air experience. Remember that Matt Damon movie where they bought a zoo? Jeep ownership is like that, but on wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1960s, however, Jeeps were seen as purely utilitarian niche vehicles. So, in aMad Men-type of marketing move, the company came up with a special, luxury trim to expand the vehicle\u2019s appeal and entice new customers. One of these special Jeeps has just turned up on Bring a Trailer (which, likeCar and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). It\u2019sa 1964 Jeep CJ-5A Tuxedo Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The example is, more specifically, a Tuxedo Park Mark IV, as Jeep first rolled out the trim level (named after a tony New York City suburb) in 1961. Basically, it’s been shotgunned with extra chrome elements, from bumpers to hubcaps. These last are not installed, but included with the vehicle separately. It also included softer springs, a column shifter, and optional seat cushions for the rear wheel housings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the plan work? Basically, nope. Between the CJ-5A and CJ-6A, some 4300 Tuxedo Parks were sold in 1964. Still, it\u2019s very unusual and interesting, if you’re a Jeep fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine was good for 75 horsepower and is paired here with a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. The lever on the floor is for switching between high range and low range, and that four-cylinder is torquey, with 114 pound-feet of twist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather hilariously, the speedometer reads to 90 mph, which you almost certainly would not want to do even if this little pony would do it\u2014particularly not on a set of 20-year-old tires. Instead, swap on some fresh rubber and set a course for your local trails for some proper Jeepin’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or just cruise out for a coffee run on a Sunday morning. The Tuxedo Park didn’t change Jeep’s image much, but that didn’t really matter in the long run. The fun of a rugged, bare-bones vehicle like this is how it can turn even a short drive into an adventure. Along with all that off-road stuff, that’s what Jeeps do best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
