Earlier this year, Ford unleashed the Mustang Dark Horse SC, effectively a successor to the legendaryShelby GT500. The last GT500, which retired in 2022, never received a convertible option, and neither did the GT350 from 2015, meaning it has been over a decade since Ford offered a drop-top high-performance Mustang. Now, that hiatus is over, with Ford revealing the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you remember the specs from the Dark Horse SC coupe\u2019s January reveal, you pretty much know what to expect from the convertible. Under the hood is the Predator 5.2-liter V-8, topped with a supercharger and cranking out 795 ponies and 660 pound-feet of torque. That muscle is transferred through a Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a carbon-fiber driveshaft to the rear wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assertive styling carries over too, with a front end covered in vents and intakes, with a pair of nostrils on either side of the grille and a carbon-fiber band between the many mesh openings. The swollen wheel arches, sharp side sills, rectangular exhaust outlets, and sizable rear wing also remain, and the convertible also features the same lightweight magnesium tower-to-tower brace in the engine bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a few differences versus the coupe and convertible, however. While the fixed-roof Dark Horse SC was developed with track performance in mind, Ford envisions the topless version as being more street-focused, positioning it as a grand tourer, albeit one with a brash, V-8-fueled attitude. At a media event, Mustang marketing manager Ryan Shaughnessy mentioned thePorsche 911 Cabriolet, Mercedes-AMG SL, andChevy Corvette Z06as competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This led to a few tuning and packaging changes. While the convertible still features a MagneRide suspension with the incredibly adaptive magnetorheological dampers, Ford says it gets a unique tune that is less aggressive and less focused on track driving. Ford also won\u2019t offer the convertible with the coupe\u2019s Track package, which included carbon-fiber wheels, grippier tires, and carbon-ceramic brakes from theMustang GTD. This also means the convertible cannot be optioned with the unique Teal Accent package, as the teal-painted brake calipers only come in the beefier GTD-spec form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ford says the roof goes down at the touch of a button, but didn\u2019t say if it could be opened while the car is in motion. The Dark Horse SC convertible is based on the Mustang GT convertible, and Ford claims the body structure was already rigid enough that it didn\u2019t need to add any additional bracing. Chief engineer Arie Groeneveld did explain that this is partly due to the convertible\u2019s grand-tourer positioning, and if the convertible had been designed for track duty like the coupe, more reinforcements likely would\u2019ve been necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The convertible also introduces a new color, the lush Precision Purple, which was developed from the Blue Ember Metallic hue on the standard Dark Horse. The new color recalls the iconic Mystichrome paint jobs of the old Mustang Cobra models with its color-shifting abilities, with red and pink hues emerging depending on how the light hits it. The interior is available in either Black Onyx or Space Gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ford says the goal of the Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible is to bring joy to its driver, with Groeneveld saying that \u201cjoy is understating it; it\u2019s a \u2018Hell yeah!\u2019\u201d With no roof to get between the driver and the exhaust note of the supercharged V-8, we imagine that exclamation will emerge from many drivers\u2019 mouths behind the Dark Horse SC convertible\u2019s steering wheel. Orders open this fall, with deliveries set to kick off in the spring of 2027. Pricing will be announced later, but expect a roughly $5000 jump over the coupe, likely putting the cost at around $110,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
