Early this year, we learned of a surprising automotive revival. Jensen International Automotive, which had been busy restoring the classic Interceptor of the \u201960s and \u201970s, announced it was developing an all-new Interceptor GTX. This summer, the company teased the car again and said it would arrive first in track-only form. Now, Jensen International has fully unveiled the Interceptor GTX and hinted at how the GTX will translate into a road-going model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V-8 Brawn<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interceptor GTX\u2019s spec sheet looks promising. Under the hood lies a supercharged V-8 sending 960 horsepower to the rear wheels. Based on an LT-series engine from General Motors, the V-8 has been heavily reengineered by Texas-based Late Model Engines, and fewer than 20 percent of the original GM components remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 6.8-liter engine can rev to 7000 rpm and is mated to a 2.7-liter Roots-type supercharger with electronic boost control, which Jensen International says provides rapid throttle response and linear power delivery. Modifications include CNC-machined heads, titanium valves, and reworked variable valve timing and direct-injection systems. Jensen says the engine is capable of up to 1200 horsepower and over 1000 pound-feet of torque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That muscle is sent to the rear transaxle via a carbon-fiber driveshaft that sits within a steel torque tube. The six-speed sequential transmission from Samsonas Motorsport features straight-cut dog gears, and the driver can shift either via steering-column-mounted paddles or a lever on the transmission tunnel. Jensen International says the future road-going Interceptors could use either an H-pattern manual transmission or an automatic gearbox. The Interceptor GTX uses steel brake rotors, and the brake balance is adjustable from within the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jensen International didn\u2019t provide a curb weight, but says the all-aluminum chassis creates a rigid structure while keeping weight down. It\u2019s complemented by an aluminum unequal-length control-arm suspension with three-way manually adjustable dampers. The Interceptor GTX also uses a hydraulic power-assisted steering rack, and it rides on forged-aluminum one-piece Vossen 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Assertive Design<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The styling references the original Interceptor without being a faithful recreation. The GTX follows its forebear\u2019s dramatic proportions, with a long hood and a fastback roofline. Jensen International partnered with Avant Design, an independent studio that has also worked on the electricLongbow sports carand theLEVC TXthat serves as London\u2019s default taxi, and it recently shared avision of a future Lotus sports car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bodywork is handcrafted from aluminum by British specialists Coventry Metalcraft and is characterized by crisp, assertive lines. The front end reminds us of theChevy Camaro, and the GTX\u2019s motorsports focus makes it look like a more luxurious take on theNASCAR Garage 56 racerthat took on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The headlights sit within a thin, recessed band across the front end, with vertical, slanted LEDs sitting on either side of the grille. The roof is painted black, and the rear section of the cabin features a sizable glass panel, echoing the glass rear dome that made the original Interceptor stand out. The rear fascia features a simple LED full-width taillight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aerodynamics play a key role on the GTX. The front bumper incorporates a large splitter below a trapezoidal intake, within which sits another carbon-fiber plane. A large slash behind the front wheels extracts hot air from the brakes, and the distinctive side skirts feature fins at the front and rear. A massive diffuser is integrated into the rear bumper, with the oval exhaust pipes positioned just above. And it\u2019s impossible to miss the adjustable rear wing, which towers above the sloping glass and can generate over 771 pounds of downforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cabin looks like it came straight out of a race car, with a bespoke, FIA-approved roll cage, Tillett carbon-fiber seats, six-point harnesses, and a fire-extinguisher system. There\u2019s a sizable digital display behind the steering wheel, but no central screen. Still, despite the stripped-back approach, Jensen International has fitted Alcantara-wrapped padding with orange stitching for a bit of added comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Comes Next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jensen International describes the GTX as an \u201cenhanced prototype,\u201d but this radical track car will spawn street-legal Interceptors in the future, with the company also revealing its first images of these models. Jensen is planning an Interceptor GTR\u2014essentially a roadgoing version of the GTX\u2014and a more luxury-focused Interceptor GT. The images of the expanded family show a GT model with cleaner bodywork devoid of aerodynamic appendages and a GTR model that sits somewhere in between with a smaller wing and front splitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interceptor GTX will now begin dynamic testing and evaluation, and Jensen says it will work with customers to tailor the vehicle specifications to each individual. There was no timeline provided for when the GTX might reach customers, nor when the GTR and GT models will launch. Jensen International has previously said the GTX would be available in the U.K. in “ultra-limited numbers,\u201d but it\u2019s unclear if those plans are still in place.
