Tesla has announced a recall in China affecting approximately 2.98 million vehicles across its Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X line-up after regulators concluded that retractable electronic door handles can become difficult to operate following a severe collision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action, filed with China\u2019s State Administration for Market Regulation, covers both imported and China-built examples of the four Tesla models and is the largest single-automaker recall reported in the Chinese market to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the recall notices, the problem can appear if the vehicle\u2019s low-voltage electrical system fails as a result of a serious crash. In that scenario, the electronically actuated retractable door handles may not extend or operate normally, which could slow or prevent occupants from exiting and delay rescue efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla told Chinese regulators it will address the issue through a combination of measures. Owners will see warning labels affixed to affected cars, and Tesla plans a remote software update for window controls so windows automatically lower after an accident to provide an alternative escape route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For vehicles that cannot receive over\u2011the\u2011air (OTA) updates, Tesla said it will contact owners and arrange workshop repairs. The company also reported a separate recall element covering driver-monitoring systems on certain units, proposing a software upgrade and in-cabin camera monitoring to enhance driver attention systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The China recall comes alongside a wave of defect campaigns from other automakers; authorities said roughly eight additional automakers have announced recalls this cycle, bringing the combined total in China to about 4.3 million vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. regulators have noted that the affected manufacturers have not disclosed plans to issue comparable recalls in the United States. Tesla itself has been active with earlier recalls this year: in May the company recalled a small number of Cybertrucks over wheel-stud concerns and also issued a separate recall covering delayed rearview camera images on more than 218,000 vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla\u2019s remedy strategy stresses remote software fixes where possible, with in-person service only for cars that cannot be updated remotely. The company did not publish an exact timeline for the rollout of the window-control update or the driver-monitoring fixes in the regulator filings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recall highlights the safety implications of electronic convenience systems such as retractable handles and the growing reliance on OTA software as a primary remediation method in modern vehicles.
