Volvo has lofty ambitions. Last week, Volvo showed a refreshed XC40, before revealing updated XC60 and XC90 SUVs a couple of days ago. But that\u2019s just the start, with Volvo announcing a major product expansion, with 13 new vehicles set to be released by 2030, and we think some of them will see Volvo return to its station wagon roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swedish automaker says this is the \u201clargest and most ambitious global product push in its 99-year history,\u201d and Volvo says its lineup will include both fully electric cars and third-generation hybrids. Volvo will focus on developing models for specific markets, with six new cars for China and seven new cars for Western markets. The models bound for our shores will ride on the SPA2 and SPA3 platforms. The former can already be found in thePolestar 3(now gone from the U.S. market) and Volvo EX90, while the latter underpins theVolvo EX60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volvo also says the plans will include \u201ccars in new segments,\u201d although it didn\u2019t elaborate on what segments these will be. However, in one of its presentation slides, Volvo said it was planning \u201cnew low & high body types,\u201d and we think the \u201clow\u201d vehicles will likely be station wagons and sedans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This lines up with a recent report fromAutomotive News,which stated that Volvo was developing a new electric sedan and wagon that are set to be sold in the United States. The models could be called ES60 and EV60, and would go on sale in 2028. The models would ride on the SP3 platform, with prices starting in the low-$50,000 range. AnotherAutomotive Newsreport points to a new compact electric SUV called the EX50, set to replace the recently departedEX40, and arrive in fall 2027 on the SPA3 platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A potential return of a Volvo wagon is an exciting proposition. Volvo became famous for its station wagons, particularly for the long-running 240 of the \u201970s and \u201980s, and the sporty 850 T-5R from 1995. But the rise of SUVs as the dominant form factor for family cars saw sales of Volvo\u2019s wagons decline, and the V90 and V60 are both being discontinued in the U.S. after the 2026 model year.
