This Armory Week, the Perrotin-backed provocateur collective is linking up with Lexus to debut a new pair of car sculptures, as part of a pop-up exhibition, dubbed MOTOMORPHOSIS, at Chelsea Industrial, running from September 24 through 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The works on view rework two of the automaker\u2019s electrified vehicles \u2014 a Lexus RZ450e and Lexus RX450h+ \u2014 into seriously surreal pieces, made to evoke the feeling of movement, rather than movement itself. The first is stretched to loop, nose-to-tail, doomed to drive in a circle forever, in a piece called \u201cCircle Car.\u201d \u201cTwisted Car,\u201d nearby, twists the latter model into a \u201cdramatic longitudinal torsion,\u201d per the brand. Functional versions of the vehicles will be displayed alongside their sculptural counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MSCHF calls these pieces \u2018Form Cars,\u2019 perhaps inspired by a lineage of automotive artworks, like Pippa Garner\u2018s \u201cBackwards Car\u201d and \u201cKarmann,\u201d and Erwin Wurm\u2019s bubbly and bizarre sculptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost conversations about electrification focus on how a vehicle is powered. MOTOMORPHOSIS asks a different question: what can electricity power in our imagination?\u201d said Lisa McQueen, Lexus\u2019s senior marketing manager. \u201cWorking with MSCHF allowed us to take the automobile beyond its familiar form and explore movement, transformation and possibility in an entirely new way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
