RM Sotheby’s is offering a rare chance to acquire one of just 10 Porsche 911 GT2 R race cars built in 1997. Originally finished in Glacier White, this 993-generation GT2 R was delivered to Dutch driver René Snel and later owned by GT champion and Frikadelli Racing founder Klaus Abbelen.
The car saw active racing until a crash in 1999, after which the chassis number was transferred to a new shell. It returned to competition under Abbelen in the early 2000s, racing at Nürburgring, Hockenheim and Monza. In 2014, it was acquired by The Stuttgart Legends Collection and partially restored by Peter Holzner in 2017, with repairs totaling $23,200 USD.
Notably, the GT2 R is being offered in unfinished condition and without a chassis number or matching engine, but presents a compelling project for historic racing enthusiasts. With the right expertise, the car could be rebuilt to period-correct spec and made eligible for events like Masters Endurance Legends and Peter Auto’s Endurance Racing Legends. The car comes with a Wagenpass, inspection by Andy Prill, spare BBS wheels and numerous components.
This rare GT2 R is set to be auctioned off on May 22 as part of RM Sotheby’s upcoming Milan Sale.
