Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again shifted the goalposts for the elusive next-generation Tesla Roadster. Taking to social media, Musk announced on X that the highly anticipated EV supercar’s grand reveal will “probably” take place next month, setting a new target for late April 2026. After initially teasing an April Fool’s Day demonstration during a late-2025 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, the tech billionaire has slightly pushed back the timeline while hyping the upcoming vehicle as “a banger next-level.”
The next-generation Tesla Roadster has navigated a myriad of delays since it first hit the stage as a prototype in 2017. Originally slated to hit the streets by 2020, the all-electric powerhouse has been continually sidelined as the company prioritized scaling core models like the Model Y and Cybertruck, alongside its autonomous driving software. The constant reshuffling has tested the patience of early adopters who locked in substantial pre-order deposits — ranging from $50,000 USD for standard models to a hefty $250,000 USD for the limited Founders Series.
Despite the ongoing skepticism, tangible momentum is finally building behind the scenes. Tesla recently filed new trademark applications with the USPTO that reveal a slightly squarer roofline silhouette compared to its original concept. Coupled with fresh patent filings for an integrated single-piece composite seat and renewed hiring pushes for Roadster manufacturing engineers, the automaker is clearly making progress. However, with Musk’s shift in terminology from a “demo” to an “unveil,” industry insiders suspect a massive redesign is in play, meaning actual mass production could be pushed out as far as 2027.
