Porsche and British company Hedley Studios officially revealed the Porsche 550 Spyder J, an 80-percent scale, all-electric replica of the classic sports car. Created as an officially licensed reimagining, the limited-edition vehicle was built to mark 75 years of Porsche Motorsport. The original 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder remains a foundational motorsport legend, having secured a class victory and a third-place overall finish at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. This performance directly inspired the brand’s long-running “Carrera” moniker. By translating this pioneering racing heritage into a battery-powered format, the release bridges Stuttgart’s storied combustion-engine past with a contemporary collector’s item. Porsche stated it is specifically targeting collectors and design enthusiasts for the Porsche 550 Spyder J.
To ensure exact historical accuracy in a shrunken footprint, the replica was developed using original archive drawings and scans sourced directly from the Porsche Corporate Archives in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Handcrafted at the Hedley Studios facility in Bicester, U.K., the vehicle measures approximately nine feet long and four feet wide, with exact metric dimensions of 2.9 meters by 1.2 meters by 0.8 meters. Each miniature car comprises more than 1,300 meticulously crafted components, built around a rigid steel space-frame chassis and finished with a lightweight carbon-fibre body. Despite its scaled-down size, the vehicle is uniquely engineered to accommodate two people.
Underneath the carbon-fibre shell, the new build completely replaces the original car’s legendary type 547 Fuhrmann four-cylinder boxer engine with an all-electric, 48-volt powertrain. The electrified replica is offered in multiple output configurations, though it remains strictly not road-legal. Standard trim features an 8 kW (11 hp) motor that delivers a top speed of 40 mph. For buyers seeking a higher performance ceiling, an optional RS Package increases the power output to either 15 kW (22 hp) or 16 kW, enabling a top speed of up to 50 mph (80 km/h). To manage that power, each unit comes standard with four distinct drive modes: Novice, Comfort, Sport and Race.
Production of the Porsche 550 Spyder J is strictly limited to 250 units worldwide. Designed to function as a highly customizable art piece as much as a drivable homage, the replica offers a deep roster of personalization options.
